VOLTA – The Cirque du Soleil Show Like No Other

Cirque du Soleil VOLTA

Volta, the newest Cirque du Soleil show is in Miami.

I adore Cirque du Soleil, and I was so excited to be invited as part of the media to attend opening night of VOLTA. The Cirque du Soleil performers are awe-inspiring. The costumes and the music elevate the heroic acrobatic feats that are the signature to these troops. The shows are stunning and entertaining and marvelous.

The newest show, Volta is no exception, except its more.

Volta takes the classic Cirque du Soleil formula and brings in a more tightly woven narrative and audience participation. There is a sense of real-time liveliness that is not about perfection but about support and togetherness which I loved. The music is by synth-pop band M83 who will have you dancing in your seat and wishing you were in the hottest club in Miami.

This show is FUN, yet as elegant as every Cirque du Soleil show before it.

The newest stunts come from the world of extreme sports. There is a full-scale skate park where BMX riders are whirling high in the sky. If you have a fan of parkour, BMX, bungee-jumping or just love a good adrenaline rush, you will love these impressive new elements of the show.

For me, the choreography, music, and costuming is always my favorite part of the Cirque du Soleil shows. While my jaw-drops at all the stunts, I really enjoyed the addition to the sidekick character Shood Kood Wood. Some of my favorite moments are the comedic momentum this character gives to VOLTA. It will catch you completely off-guard and it is such a deviation from the other Cirque du Soleil shows I have seen.

Although Volta is completely fun and has many youthful themes like freedom, being true to yourself, and following your heart, I think this show is best for children a little older. It all depends on your comfort level, note there is a scene where a magical flower makes for some groovy transformations. There is also a scene where some bejeweled golden undies and butt-cheeks are shown. While I think my 5 and 6-year-old would find this shining moon hilarious, as it is meant to be, some might prefer their small children not see this type of thing. For me, it’s probably one of those moments it will go over children’s heads, I just think its worth noting.

If you have tweens and teens, or just love Cirque du Soleil, go see this show!
